Thanatopsis zine was established in 1994. 3 issues were released between 94-98. 1st issue was "Open Minded" and had interviews with all sorts of bands in the underground, regardless of genre. Issue 2 and 3 concentrated on metal only. With the advances in technology and the internet, Thanatopsis zine has emerged as a blog/e-zine.

Weezer are by far my favourite band of all time. Starting with the 'Blue' album back in 1994 I was hooked on the band's form of 'Geek Rock', stemming from the glasses that Rivers, the singer wears and also the lyrical themes of their early records.I have all their cd's, the only band that I have an almost complete discography (albums only..) - I'm missing 'The Lion and the Witch' cd only. My other collection that comes close is Misery Index's discography which I have only started to collect.
Raditude are their 7th studio album which was released in October 2009 and it has taken me this long to review it. The album title was suggested by a friend of Rivers' who also happens to be an actor by the name of Rainn Wilson. The last album before this was released in 2008 and I haven't even had time to absorb that yet and out comes this new album. For one the album title seems a bit, I don't know, childish or immature.
The 1st track off this album "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" sounds a bit like songs from back in the 50-60's and is the 1st single from the album. A good opener to the album. The rest of the songs are catchy like most Weezer songs are but the lyrical themes are not what you expect from Weezer - "I'm your daddy", "The Girl Got Hot", "In the Mall" etc deal more with what teenagers would go through than what men in their 40s would do. If you hear the songs on their own and don't know it was Weezer, you will like them or if you're a 1st time listener, most likely you will like them. But for 'old' Weezer fans, it just doesn't feel right and some what creepy (I'm your daddy? In the mall?) to think that men in their 40s to sing about this. There is also a song co written with The All American Rejects vocalist called "Put Me Back Together" which I'm surprised about and a song which was done earlier by Sugar Ray called "Love is the Answer" with some sitar/indian parts to it.
"Can't stop partying" is my favourite song off this album. Not typical Weezer in that there is actual rapping and singing about jewels, bitches and the like - like all hip hop songs are as well as rapping by Lil Wayne none the less with expletives which were unheard of in the history of Weezer! Catchy as hell! You gotta hear it and just blank out the fact that it is a Weezer song - or am I secretly liking hip hop?? Fuck no! Fuck hip hop hehehehe
Weezer are kind of going on a tangent from when they 1st started out - newer material are more "fun" and "popular" - on "Pork and Beans" on the "red" album he talks about working with Timbaland can make them top of the charts. I guess they maybe want to be more popular now and target a younger/teenage audience with the new material, but I'm still a sucker for them as Rivers does make catchy songs which stick in your head.
Hello to everybody who's reading this review. I ve never done this type of work since the day Thanatopsis Zine was defunct. Even back at that time, I was damn too lazy (still am) to contribute even Noorwan Warlock was fed up .. Still, the Thanatopsis days were quite sweet for both us as budak2 nak kenal dunia musik underground and we were once called by Wan Warlock's mom as 'The Underground Publisher' ..Seriously? Yes, of course...Enough about those sweet memories, I would like to present you guys with my backdated review as the event was actually in December 2007. So, enjoy or if u just found it sucks just read it halfway okay..?
What come across your mind upon the word Love Metal.? I bet, the Finnish band fronted by a skinny 'Mat Fit' guy called His Infernal Majesty or H.I.M. Im not an avid fan of them, though i find some of their songs great. The reason I went to see them was due to the fact that my wife is (maybe was) an avid fan of Vallo and HIM of course and the way we managed to get into the concert was quite funny as well. I got the ticket from the 'Ulat Tiket' (..he he he bukan kt sini saja ada especially time raya, dekat konsert HIM di tengah-tengah London pun ada.). Before anything, I went to London with my wife, around 2 years ago. It was our dream to visit the first world country..and UK to be specific is the best place. Sebelum ni dok tengok gambar-gambar Wan Warlock saja kat London plus tons of fantastic pictures of mighty Emperor, Morbid Angel, Nile, Immortal shows. To be honest Napalm Death first show in KL around year 2001 if Im not mistaken was the last gig I attended. I almost forgot all the details pertaining to this event but Ill try my best though.
We went to the venue the day before and we saw the fans already lined up to enter venue even at 11 a.m. (The show starts at 6 p.m. and there were two shows on the 12th and 13th of December 2007 and we went to the 13th show). We were quite nervous upon entering the venue (The Famous 'Astoria London'). My friend Fathi who was working in London that time laughed me off as he told me that Astoria is the place for gays. Who cares anyway as long as I can see the band. In fact many legendary bands had performed here. We had some security check right at the door and were cleared despite of the tasty orange juice being seized..yes Orange Juice kat sana adalah Orange Juice dgn kata sebenar (takdak tipu2 tmbh perisa mcm kita kat sini).
So when we were inside it's already full house and this Emo band or anything 'yang swaktu dengannya ' called Kill Hannah were performing. One thing I noticed there were only 15 to 20 % males and the the rest were females. They were kind of suck n I felt quite gelii to watch them, so we just wait for HIM.
When the time finally came, HIM delivered it the way they do. Vallo's voice was remarkably stunning (sebijik sejibik) and gals love him (due to the fact that lingeries n teddy bears were thrown at him). Most of the numbers performed that night was from Venus Doom and I was not familiar with any of those songs since Im into old HIM. I enjoyed the show though when they performed Wicked Game (their version of course), Funeral of heart, plus many songs from their first three albums. My wife did sing along to the songs (she's into early HIM as well) and to be honest I really enjoyed it when I saw her enjoying the show.
It was quite a good performance by them and their musicianship seemed flawless n knowing that 40 pounds we forked out for the show really worth for the money spent as well once in a life time experience. We would never come to London again as we would never afford to come again..he he
The shows ended around 10 at night and just by the road they were selling Merchandise (official HIM's merchandise) we were just windowing (which we regretted later because we shud have at least buy the poster or tour tshirt) as we needed to catch up the train to Malaysia Hall hostel plus it was too cold to stay outside since it was only our second day there and we were still coping with such cold winter. We rushed to the Tottenham Court Road tube station and headed to Queensway tube station n walked to Bayswater with our telinga still bengang but yet with sheer satisfaction.

Pretty much aku boleh cop show ni sebagai antara show paling brutal yang pernah aku pergi selama duduk kat Australia. Dengan line-up paling brutal seperti tajuk di atas, aku tak komplen banyak for a price of $80. It was insane!
Show bermula tepat 7.30 malam, as written on the ticket with Origin first on the bill. Lepas diner pizza kat pizza house(that is the metal diet FYI, not effing nasi goreng etc.) terus menuju ke venue dengan member Malaysian aku Rodziq, who is a fan of modern metal.
ORIGIN
This band kicked massive ass. Seriously, they drove the crowd totally insane. A really damn good start and warm up to a really intense show that night. Total death metal(we are not including any underground death metal here, nor oldschool).
Walaupun technical death metal isn’t really my thing, but live performance of ORIGIN really kicked my ass. Sheer brutality through the amps, trigger loaded bass drums, non-stop blasbeats just made my head explode .Actually that was more of an exaggeration, hehe. ORIGIN main agak lama aku rasa, enough to make me feel so warmed-up, which is the only feeling I can get out of a solo-headlining show but this time no local supports that idles it.
Antara benda paling eye-catching pada aku about ORIGIN adalah bassist diorang. Total precise, no bullshit impromptu notes, played so intense that aku rasa tali bass tu akan putus one by one. Vocalist pun demonic (new vocalist after the fat, bald guy.I think he was the former vocalist in The Faceless), drummer(John Longstreth) was very precise, blasting and super damn fast, ‘I betcha can’t play like him’. Namun, aku terperasan masa lagu second last drummer terlepas drumstick, hehe, but he was too good to make that looks silly, instead his skills in improvising his drumming. At the end, aku rasa set Origin agak lama nak bandingkan dengan set band-band lain.They run about an hour, which caused me to warm-up pretty quick. On the other note, aku paling suka gig-gig di Aussie ni sebab sound mixing sangat professional. I have never been so disappointed when I walked out of a show.
MISERY INDEX
Next up were MISERY INDEX, there is nothing much I can argue about their performance, not saying that I am not a big fan of them, but because they played for 40 minutes, I was utterly unsatisfied. Stuff diorang ni sangat catchy, grind+death. Really good stuff. Sparky (second guitarist) yang sampai lambat ke venue agak gelabah masa setup gitar BC Rich beliau, tapi bila dah nama pro, setup kejap je, tak payah lama-lama, and with provision of good sound mix by the PA themselves, everything was superb. MISERY INDEX agak terlambat dalam 8 minit gara-gara Sparky dan itu maybe antara sebab kenapa aku rasa set diorang sangat kejap.
Sejak mula-mula aku kenal MISERY INDEX, I have always been amazed by the Drummer, Adam Jarvis who is a beast at what he is doing. Dia ni kalau beat punya gila, aku rasa boleh pecah cymbal, toms and the whole drum kit, I mean you should witness yourself, he played as if he didn’t realize his kit is all triggered! Apart from that, all went really smooth, super tight performance by them. Aku rasa they hardly played any stuff from their infamous split with MUMAKIL. I screamed few times to them to play ‘49 Seconds of Hate’, but it was all useless, heh. And yeah I was right up at the front row during MISERY INDEX’s set. Below is a video of them playing the first 2 songs on ‘Traitors’ album. I remember them correctly as this is pretty much the best album of these fellas. Oh yea by the way, I met Sparky and the other guitarist when I was on my way out to my bike after the show, they were really cool and hilarious( yea, mumbling ‘brootal’ and ‘metulz ‘on every shot is hilarious).

PSYCROPTIC
Next up were OZ metal legends(new breed), PSYCROPTIC with ‘OZ metal banner’ they bring on each shoulder of the members(This is a metaphor, ahem), they much the most trigger loaded band of that night. I mean seriously so fully-loaded of trigger especially the drums, I can feel my head almost exploded due to intensity.I was only on the second row of the crowd, and my chest and head are throbbing so hard. The guitarist seemed like he just got back from work to play this show, with his kemeja on, and slacks.LOL. Again, the most brutal part I can witness was the drummer, with all the speed, flying hands and blasting bass drums.
Actually I am not a big fan of Psycroptic, beberapa attempt to get into them had failed miserably. I don’t know exactly why, but these trendsetter of technical death metal OZ style is just magnificent. I am not surprised to hear them succeeded themselves going overseas, playing with other massive death metal acts around the world, like Summer Slaughter, and some other European tours to name a few festivals.
DECAPITATED
I was totally worn out during DECAPITATED due to excessive headbanging during the first 2 bands who were insanely insane. Getting to stand right up front was a big risk, getting nudged in your head, pushed to the edge of the stage by the mosh kids behind your back and all that, but I risk them all just to witness these phenomenal modern death metal pioneers.
The new line up of DECAPITATED was great. With Krimh replacing Vitek(RIP), he is the relentless gun of this band. The new vocalist did not really amaze me much, but he is alright. Going through the set list, they have pretty big mix of the latest album and one song or 2 from the old albums.I expected more stuff coming out from Winds of Creation or Nihility but whatever, they put on a really intense show.
Oh ya, I also noticed Krimh was the only member of the band who set up his kit himself. Others had assistants to help them do the job setting up guitars and bass.
Another thing that I noticed was ; ‘From pain to strength’ was DECAPITATED's motto for this whole tour. To me it was obvious enough how that applied to DECAPITATED, who came back from the pain they had after an accident few years back. Still this show put a notion that these motherfuckers still had the guts to rip our heads apart that night.
DECAPITATED’s set went for an hour, with no encore (sadface). I got a souvenir from Krimh, a bottle of mineral water. Haha that is probably no really a worth knowing fact of the night but it means a lot to me. Yeah , I was kind of excited.
Overall, it was a brutal night of death metal. I seriously had too much of it.
Dah lama aku nak tulis pasal album ni. Aku sekarang mmg susah nak dengar band-band baru ataupun album-album baru dari band2 yg aku minat. Jadi aku sekarang mencari kembali album2 lama yang pernah aku miliki masa muda atau album2 yang sampai sekarang aku still minat dan dgr. Aku pun sekarang mula mengumpul semula album2 tersebut.
Album ini dikeluarkan pada tahun 1995, time ni aku form 4. Album ni 2nd album Oasis selepas Definitely Maybe dan merupakan breakthrough album untuk Oasis. Time tu mmg zaman top brit rock dengan byk band2 seperti Blur , Stone Roses dan sebagainya. Aku ingat lagi aku pinjam kaset depa ni dari jambu aku kat sekolah dulu, dan x bg balik!
Bermula dgn track Hello, sehingga ke track terakhir, Champagne Supernova, ni la contoh terbaik Brit Rock. Bagi aku Blur lebih sedikit ke electronica, tapi Oasis mmg straight guitar rock.
Lagu Don't look back at anger dulu kami dok jam masa sekolah menengah. Lyrics yang mmg bg aku terbaik. Bermula dgn intro piano, guitar dan drums - Slip inside the eye of your mind...... nyanyian Noel - adik kpd Liam yang main singer. Liam baru2 ni aku dgr mendapat anugerah frontman terbaik, x igt sapa bagi.
Lagu penutup Champagne Supernova lagu yang slow dan tepat sbg penghujung album ni. Where were you while we were getting high?
Tetapi walaupun hebat album ni, aku masih belum miliki album ni secara fizikal. Minat semula terhadap album ni baru mendatang dan x pergi cari lagi album ni, nanti aku pergi JB Hifi dan beli. Setakat ni dalam version digital saja la..... Apa2 pun album ni patut dimiliki!
